How to Prune Like a Pro

Why Prune?

Pruning not only helps your plant grow fuller with more stems, but it also gives you the chance to grow a whole new plant from the cuttings.

As long as the cutting includes a node, you can propagate it into a thriving new addition to your collection!

General Pruning Tips

  • Always cut just above a node—that’s usually where new growth will pop out. pruning at that spot encourages the plant to branch out or push out new leaves from there.
  • Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to avoid crushing or tearing the stem—a clean cut helps the plant heal faster and reduces the risk of infection. i wipe mine down with 70% isopropyl alcohol before and after to prevent spreading any diseases between plants. supplies are linked here
  • don’t prune if the plant is already stressed out! if the plant is drooping, wilting, losing leaves, or recovering from pests or repotting, it’s already under stress. pruning adds another layer of stress and can slow down its recovery even more. i always wait until the plant is healthy and hydrated before making any cuts—pruning a thirsty plant can make things worse.

What is a Node?

A node is where a leaf or stem grows from.
